Composite Bonding

Fast, affordable and a versatile way to update the look of your teeth

What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding, also known as dental bonding or tooth bonding, is a cosmetic dental treatment which offers a solution to repair minor damage or update issues with your teeth that will improve your smile.

You might choose to have dental bonding to:

  • Repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Improve the appearance of discoloured teeth
  • Make small teeth appear longer
  • Change the shape of teeth
  • Make uneven teeth appear more uniform

Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured dental resin which is applied and shaped to your tooth. It is then hardened with a special light which ‘bonds’ the resin to your tooth to improve its appearance. Patients from Hammersmith, Turnham Green, Acton and West London are choosing tooth bonding because treatment is fast, painless effective and an affordable way to update the look of teeth.

How does dental bonding in West London work?

Depending upon the number of teeth needing composite bonding, you will have one or more appointments for treatment.

Consultation

Prior to treatment, we will have an initial consultation with you to discuss what you would like to change about your teeth, and we will discuss in more detail the process for dental bonding. Our cosmetic dentist will also inspect your mouth to check on your oral health.

Treatment

At your next appointment at the dental surgery in Shepherd’s Bush, your dentist will begin by choosing a dental resin that closely matches the colour of your teeth. Next, your dentist will prepare the tooth by gently etching at the surface and applying a conditioning liquid. These techniques are completely painless and help the dental resin adhere to the tooth. Your dentist will then apply the tooth-coloured resin to your tooth, gently moulding and shaping it until it has the desired look. Next, a bright light or laser is placed over your mouth to harden the dental bonding so that it sticks firm to your tooth. Finally, your dentist will polish the tooth to ensure that it is smooth and that there are no rough surfaces. Each tooth takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

Step 3

You wear the first set of aligners in your pack for a minimum of 20 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, to drink anything other than water and to brush your teeth. Change your aligners to the next set in the series after one week.

Continue in this way until you reach the last set of aligners in the series and your treatment is complete. Periodically, we will request that you come into see us so that we can check on your progress and ensure that treatment is continuing in the way that it should.

At the end of your Invisalign® treatment, we will offer you removable or permanent retainers. This ensures that your teeth remain in position and will not move in the future.

FAQs

Will I need to care for my teeth differently after tooth bonding?

Bonded teeth do not need any special care with cleaning. You will need to continue to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time and floss at least once a day. You should continue to regularly visit your dentist and hygienist. Teeth bonding can chip and be more prone to staining so it is important to avoid chewing on things like pen lids and hard foods and you shouldn’t use your teeth to open items. You should avoid excessively consuming food or liquids which are likely to stain your bonding such as red wine, coffee or spicy curries. Your dentist can tell you more about this at your consultation.

How does dental bonding work with teeth whitening?

Composite bonding works well to give a smile upgrade when paired with teeth whitening and many of our patients in West London regularly combine the two treatments. We recommend that you start with the teeth whitening first and then the composite bonding can be matched to your new shade. Teeth whitening will not work on dental restorations like veneers, crowns or dental bonding because they will not respond to the materials used in these treatments.

How long does composite bonding last for?

On average, composite bonding lasts 3-7 years. After this time, you may need to update or replace the bonding. You can increase the longevity of your treatment by taking good care of your oral hygiene and regularly visiting the dentist and hygienist.
