What is classed as a dental emergency?

We class a dental emergency as anything which is causing you pain, swelling or bleeding to the teeth, mouth and gums. If you are unsure if you are experiencing a dental emergency, call our friendly team who will be able to assess your symptoms and get you booked in.

Common dental emergencies experienced by patients living in Acton include:

  • Persistent toothache
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A broken or loose crown
  • Painful wisdom teeth
  • A dental abscess
  • A chipped tooth
  • Loose or missing fillings
  • Bleeding from the socket of a recently extracted tooth
  • Toothache from a tooth or gum infection
It is important to call us on 020 8743 0947 to see the emergency dentist as soon as you are able so that we can get you booked in quickly. The earlier in the day you call us, the more likely we can get you to see the emergency dentist on the same day.

Advice for common dental emergencies in Acton

A knocked-out-tooth

A knocked-out-tooth is very traumatic. If you have sustained any injuries to your face or body during the incident, you should visit A&E. You or a friend should call the emergency dentist as soon as possible as this type of dental emergency is time sensitive in saving the tooth.

Handle the knocked-out tooth by the crown only, never by the roots. Do not wash or over handle the tooth. You should store it in your mouth or a pot of cold milk until you get to see the emergency dentist.

Dental abscess

A dental abscess is caused by an infection in your tooth. You may experience pain, swelling or notice inflammation. You should book to see the emergency dentist. Take paracetamol for any pain and try rinsing your mouth in warm salty water. The emergency dentist will assess your tooth, eradicate pain and may book you in for root canal treatment.

A broken crown

If a dental crown breaks, take paracetamol for any pain and rinse your mouth in warm salty water to keep the area clean and free from infection. Avoid chewing on this side of your mouth. You should eat soft foods and avoid hot and sugary drinks whilst you wait to see the emergency dentist.

If you have them, take the broken pieces of the dental crown with you to see the emergency dentist. They may be able to repair your existing crown, or you may need a new one.

What happens at an emergency dental appointment?

Depending on the nature of the dental emergency, our number one priority is to get you out of pain. This may require an urgent procedure on the day and then we will likely make you a follow up appointment to discuss definitive options for the tooth or teeth in question.

If you have a broken tooth or a lost filling or crown, we will do our best to repair this on the day if possible but in some cases, a temporary treatment will be required before booking you a follow up appointment for more definitive treatment.
This will depend upon the nature of your dental emergency, but our first priority will always be to eliminate any pain that you are experiencing. Our kind and caring team will take great care of you.
Depending on your type of dental emergency, you may need an urgent procedure carried out on the day. If not, we may make a repair to the tooth or carry out a form of temporary treatment and then book you in for a follow up appointment for a more comprehensive form of treatment.

FAQs

Can anyone have dental IV sedation?

Most people are suitable for dental IV sedation. We will check your medical history at your consultation and we may not recommend IV sedation if you have pre-existing health conditions, if you are older or if you are obese.

Which types of dental treatment can I have done with IV sedation?

Most dental procedures can be performed using IV dental sedation. We commonly use sedation for treatments such as extractions, crowns, fillings, root canal therapy and dental implants.

How do I prepare for dental sedation?

You must not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before your appointment. You should also not smoke for at least twelve hours before the sedation. You should remove contact lenses, jewellery, dentures and nail varnish before having dental sedation. Your dentist will go through all of this with you at your consultation.
