Missing Teeth

Dental Implants

Permanently replace decayed or missing teeth for a brand-new smile

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are made up of a titanium screw which is placed directly into your jawbone and acts as a new tooth root. A new false tooth, or dental crown is then placed on top to give you a completely new tooth

If you have loose, decayed or missing teeth, dental implants are the best solution to replace them. They are the most permanent and natural option as they function and look just like another tooth. Unlike dentures, there’s no need to remove dental implants – they remain fixed in your mouth. You can eat whatever you like and talk naturally.

We have treated hundreds of patients from Shepherd’s Bush, Hammersmith, White City and throughout West London and all of them have said how dental implants have changed their lives.

What are the different types of dental implants in West London?

Dental implants are a good solution if you have one missing tooth, several missing teeth or if you have no teeth at all. Dental implants are also worth considering if you have one or many teeth which are loose, decayed or are in bad condition.

Single dental implant

If you have a single missing tooth due to decay or injury, it can be replaced with a single dental implant. This is the most common and straightforward type of dental implant, providing a natural look and feel.

Bridge supported implants

If you have multiple missing teeth in the same area, a bridge supported dental implant may be the best option. Two implants are placed at either end of the gap, supporting a fixed bridge of false teeth.

Overdentures

Overdentures, also called implant retained dentures, are supported by dental implants for better stability. These dentures clip onto the implants, preventing slippage and eliminating the need for adhesives.

All-on-4 dental implants

All-on-4 dental implants, also known as Teeth In A Day, are ideal for replacing all teeth in a jaw. Four implants support a full arch of teeth, allowing you to walk out with a complete smile the same day.

What is the process for dental implants in West London?

The dental implant process is similar no matter what type of dental implant you are having.

Consultation

At your initial consultation, we will assess your teeth and gums to determine exactly where the missing teeth or failing teeth are located in your mouth.

We will discuss the benefits and process for dental implants and answer any questions that you have.

We will also discuss your oral and general health history. It is very important that you answer questions honestly and disclose any medications that you are taking to us as this can affect whether you can have dental implants and whether dental implant treatment will be successful.

Finally, we will take x-rays and a CT scan of your mouth, teeth and gums. This gives a better indication about your oral health and helps us to better understand your bone density, both of which are important to the success of dental implant surgery.

Following on from our consultation, we will form a treatment plan which will make recommendations about the type of treatment, the process and the cost all of which will be unique to you.

Dental implant surgery

The dental implant surgery will take place at Askew Dental Care in Shepherd’s Bush.

We will give you a local anaesthetic which will numb your mouth. It is natural to feel nervous and if you are very anxious, we offer dental sedation which will keep you relaxed but awake.

If you have loose or failing teeth, we will gently extract them at this point.

Depending upon the type of dental implant that you are having, we will make a single or several incisions into your gum and gently place the dental implant into your jawbone. An abutment is placed on top of the implant and finally a temporary prosthetic tooth or dental bridge will be fitted so that you are not left with gaps in your mouth.

Healing period

It is important that we leave a period of about 3 to 6 months for your gums to heal and for your dental implants to fuse with your jawbone. This is called osseointegration and is a vital part of the process which ensures the success and longevity of your dental implants.

Creating and fitting your final set of teeth

During your healing period, the team at Askew Dental Care will be busy working on creating your new tooth or new set of teeth. These will be custom-made to fit your mouth and will be carefully colour-matched to any natural teeth that you have.

Once your healing period has finished and your restoration is ready, we will invite you back to the dental practice in Shepherd’s Bush to fit your new set of teeth.

Maintenance

The final stage is to keep your new teeth healthy which helps to protect them and ensure their longevity. Your dentist will explain how you should care for your dental implants and will book you in for regular follow up appointments to check on your oral health. Whilst your new teeth will not decay like natural teeth, they can still be susceptible to gum disease, so it is important after this process and investment to make sure that you look after your teeth so that they will last.

FAQs

What happens if I do not have sufficient jawbone to support dental implants?

If we find out that you do not have enough jawbone, we can offer bone grafting surgery. This is where we take a sample of bone from another place in your body and add it to your jawbone.

How long do dental implants last for?

On average, dental implants will last between ten and twenty years. With good care and maintenance, there is no reason why they can’t last a lifetime.

Does it hurt to get a dental implant?

During the surgery you won’t feel anything because you will have been given a local anaesthetic. If you are nervous, you can talk to your dentist at your consultation about the option of having sedation. As the local anesthetic wears off, your mouth will probably feel sore, and you should take paracetamol to manage the pain. This should ease over the next few days. Once the dental implant process is complete and you have your new set of teeth, you should not experience any pain at all.
