Dental Sedation

Fast and painless sedation so you can get the dental treatment you want or need

What is dental sedation?

It’s natural to feel nervous about seeing the dentist, but if you feel extremely anxious you may want to consider dental sedation. Dental sedation uses a drug in a controlled way to make you feel relaxed so that you can go ahead with dental treatment.

You may choose to have dental sedation if:

  • You have dental anxiety and are scared to visit the dentist
  • Are considering dental treatment which may cause discomfort
  • Are nervous about a complex or uncomfortable procedure
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • You have previously had a bad experience at the dentist

At Askew Dental Care we use IV dental sedation. This form of sedation is completely safe and overseen by a professional dentist. You will feel relaxed and remain awake during your dental treatment.

With IV sedation, a sedative is injected into your vein which is delivered to your bloodstream. Whilst you will be awake, you feel drowsy and deeply relaxed and you may not remember much about the experience afterwards.

If you live in Shepherd’s Bush, Turnham Green, Hammersmith or West London and feel anxious about seeing the dentist or having a particular dental treatment, book a consultation to find out more about IV dental sedation.

What is the process for IV dental sedation?

Consultation

At your consultation, we will discuss your general medical history and check that you are eligible for dental IV sedation. We will talk through the process along with what you should and shouldn’t do before and after having IV dental sedation. We will answer any questions that you have.

Additionally, by law, we are required to make you aware of the possible risks with IV dental sedation and to obtain your written consent before we go ahead with the process.

IV dental sedation

On the day of your treatment, we will place a cannula on your hand and the sedation is administered through the tube to your vein. You will soon begin to feel very relaxed and sleepy.

Your dentist will then be able to carry out the dental treatment that you have previously discussed. During the procedure, your oxygen levels, pulse and blood pressure will be constantly assessed.

After the treatment

Once your dental treatment is finished, you will continue to feel sleepy and relaxed for at least another hour. Another adult will need to drive you home and take care of you for the next 24 hours. You will also not be able to operate machinery, exercise or drink alcohol until the effects of the sedation have completely worn off.

FAQs

Can anyone have dental IV sedation?

Most people are suitable for dental IV sedation. We will check your medical history at your consultation and we may not recommend IV sedation if you have pre-existing health conditions, if you are older or if you are obese.

Which types of dental treatment can I have done with IV sedation?

Most dental procedures can be performed using IV dental sedation. We commonly use sedation for treatments such as extractions, crowns, fillings, root canal therapy and dental implants.

How do I prepare for dental sedation?

You must not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before your appointment. You should also not smoke for at least twelve hours before the sedation. You should remove contact lenses, jewellery, dentures and nail varnish before having dental sedation. Your dentist will go through all of this with you at your consultation.
